Research Areas:
1) Evolution of plant defense gene expression.
2) Genetic engineering of disease resistance in canola.
3) Biases on biological databases.

Dr. Fristensky’s research is focused on molecular plant pathology and bioinformatics. He is interested in the defense responses activated in plants in response to pathogenic fungi. He has isolated genes involved in the defense response, and has used these to genetically engineer disease resistance in canola. Dr. Fristensky is currently working of developing 3D imaging methods for studying the cellular responses of plants to fungal pathogens.

Dr. Fristensky has also developed the BIRCH bioinformatics system, which provides a complete set of bioinformatics tools that scale from a single workstation to an institution-wide system. Dr. Fristensky has also developed the bioLegato graphic interface, which gives the biologist an intuitive view of the data, and easy access to hundreds of programs available in BIRCH.
