Research Areas:
1) Characterizing microbial biofilms and extracellular polymeric substances and the interactions between microbial communities and their physical, biological, and chemical environment.

Dr. Gideon Wolfaardt is an environmental microbiologist at Ryerson University. He is also an adjunct professor at the Department of Applied Chemistry and Chemical Engineering at the University of Toronto and holds a Canada Research Chair in Biofilms and Interfaces. His research focuses primarily on microbial biofilm ecology, as well as applied research on topics including infection control, microbial conversion of biomass, management of mine tailings, environmental behavior of pathogens, and the environmental fate and behavior of genetically modified microbes. In addition to fundamental studies, Dr. Wolfaardt uses his Canada Research Chair as platform to liaise between industry and academia to assist in finding solutions to microbially-related problems such as infection and contamination, and to improve process efficiency in biotechnology.
