Research Areas:
1) Lymphocyte cell biology with specific emphasis on the cell surface, cell migration, adhesion and polarization.
2) Identification of biomarkers using proteomic approaches with emphasis on autoimmune diseases and transplantation.
3) Proteomic and functional genomics approaches to the characterization of cell virus interactions.
4) Differentiation using epithelial mesenchymal transition as a model system.
5) Proteomic and activity based profiling for characterization of microbes as potential biofuels sources.
6) Interfacing proteomics and immunology for the rapid identification of antibody specificity with application to hybridoma production, autoantibody and transfusion related alloantibody identification.
The underlying common feature of the biological projects relates to developing descriptions of dynamic and complex biological processes. The intent of our research is to establish an outline of processes that are critical to cell functions in health and disease. The technological aims are to develop more effective means of immunoreagent selection and characterization.
Dr. Wilkins was one of the recipients of the 2006 NSERC Brockhouse Canada Prize for Interdisciplinary Research in Science and Engineering for ‘Research in Biomolecular Mass Spectrometry’.
